Go fish

“When in doubt, choose the bigger board”. A few years ago I was looking for a new board and I collected some data with these parameters:

1. max length 7.2

2. maximize wave count in small, mushy waves

3. able to practice and progress making turns

4. surfer size: 182cm (5’10”) 80kg (176lb)

5. surfer level: a notch past beginner

After testing Torq mod fun 7’2, Torq fish 7’2, Torq fish 6’10, Hyptokrypto 6’6 and Appletree 5’8, I went for the Torq fish 6’10. For a while it felt like a good choice. But there wasn’t really a lot of progress so I went for the search again.

The latest boards with a lot potential are:

  • Modern Double Wide (7’4 x 23″ x 3 7/8″, 72 liters). Why? Longboard volume in a tight package, rails a quite thin so it turns and tilts pretty easily. It has replaced my 9’0 longboard because it catches waves almost as good and fits much easier in the car
  • Libtech Lost Puddle Jumper (5’9 x 21.5″ x 2.63″, 38 liters). Why? Nearly indestructible construction, turns on a dime, catches waves pretty well (only limit are my skills). Going to sell the Torq fish 6.10 because of this, realizing that 6.10 after all is too big for what I want to progress in
